The old Vijayanagara capital spreads across nearly 29 square kilometres of temples, palaces and market streets set among giant granite boulders on the Tungabhadra. Days here are for cycling between the Sacred Centre and the Royal Centre, seeing the Stone Chariot and Virupaksha Temple, and scrambling up a rocky hill for sunset. It suits a small group well: split bikes, swap photos, and argue over which ruin was best over dinner.
