What Joyn is, in plain terms
| What you find on Joyn | Dated, in-person plans in your city: a badminton game on Thursday, a Sunday trek, a beginners' pottery class, a coworking day, a comedy night group. |
| Who runs them | Verified members. Some are casual hosts (a neighbour organising a game); some are professionals (instructors, run clubs, trek organisers, guides). |
| What Joyn is not | Not a dating app. Not a ticket resale marketplace. Not a feed to scroll. No gambling, no digital goods, no subscriptions sold to members. |
| What it costs today | Nothing. Joining is free, hosting is free, there is no paid tier. See Pricing. |
| What it will cost | When paid plans launch, hosts who charge for a session can sell tickets through Joyn and Joyn keeps a platform fee, shown before anyone pays. Free plans stay free. |
How members are verified
Every account passes these checks before it can join or host anything:
- Phone ownership. Sign-in is by one-time password to an Indian mobile number, or by Google sign-in. The number is never shown to other members.
- Age. A date of birth is required and must make you 18 or older. Under-18 sign-ups are refused at onboarding.
- Real profile. A display name, a profile photo and a city are required before the app opens.
On top of that, any member can earn a verified badge:
- Selfie liveness check. The app runs a live-presence check (Azure AI Face liveness) on a selfie taken in the moment. A recycled photo, a screen or a printout does not pass. The verified badge is shown on the profile and on every plan the person hosts or joins.
- Government ID check. Identity is verified against a government-issued ID through DigiLocker. We store only the outcome (verified, and whether the date of birth and gender match the profile), never the document or the ID number.
- Verification is required, not optional, for sensitive plans. Hosting a restricted plan and joining a women-only plan both require a verified profile. Women-only plans admit verified women only.
Verification selfies are used only for the check and are deleted within 30 days. See the Privacy Policy.
How hosts are vetted
Anyone can post a free plan. Hosts earn standing over time, and standing is public:
- Reliability score. Built from plans the host actually ran: did the host check in at the venue, did attendees confirm they were there, were there no-shows or disputes. It cannot be bought or edited.
- Attendance history. Members marking attendance and post-plan reviews feed the score. A host who cancels late or does not turn up loses standing immediately.
- Host tiers. Casual after a first hosted plan. Verified requires a passed liveness check plus a track record of completed plans with high attendance. Paid (planned) additionally requires payout onboarding below.
- Commercial hosting is declared, not hidden. Running paid promotions or brand events without written permission from Joyn is against the Community Guidelines. Professional hosts apply through the host page and are onboarded by a person before a city opens.
KYC for hosts who charge (planned, with paid plans)
Before a host can sell a single ticket they will complete payout onboarding:
- Legal name and PAN.
- Bank account, verified by a penny-drop transfer through our payment partner.
- A passed selfie liveness check and a passed government-ID check.
- Acceptance of the Cancellations and Refunds policy and the host terms.
Joyn stores the outcome of these checks and the last four digits of the PAN and account number, not the documents. The full KYC record lives with the RBI-authorised payment aggregator that holds the host's linked account.
How money will move
Paid plans are not live yet. This is how they are designed to work, and this page will be updated when they launch.
- A host sets a ticket price and one of three cancellation policies on a specific, dated session.
- A member pays with UPI, card or net banking. The payment is collected by an RBI-authorised payment aggregator into its nodal or escrow account. Joyn never holds member money in its own bank account.
- The platform fee is shown before payment. Nothing is added afterwards.
- The host's share is held until the session has taken place and attendance has been recorded, then transferred to the host's verified bank account, typically within two working days.
- If the host cancels, every ticket is refunded in full automatically. If a member cancels, the host's chosen policy applies. See Cancellations and Refunds.
- Any ticket under dispute stays on hold until the dispute is resolved, so a refund is always possible.
The person you pay is the person who delivers the plan. Joyn's role is the platform, the verification, the hold, and the refund path.
Fraud and abuse controls
- Content moderation fails closed. Every bio, plan description, report and chat message is screened before it is stored. If the moderation service is unavailable, the write is refused rather than allowed through.
- Rate limits on plan creation, join requests and reports, so one account cannot spam hosts or flood the feed.
- Blocking is bidirectional. Blocked people cannot see each other's profiles or plans, cannot message, and cannot join each other's plans.
- Bans are enforced everywhere. A banned account loses the feed, chat and joining at once.
- Reports have a clock. Reports are acknowledged within 48 hours and resolved within 15 days, as required by the IT Rules, 2021. Urgent categories (threats, sexual content) are prioritised.
- Location is coarse. Other members see a distance band, never your exact location. Private plans hide the venue until the host approves you.
- Safety check-ins. A member can set a private "let me know you got home" reminder; if it is missed, the app escalates to a trusted contact.
Your data
Joyn collects the minimum needed to run the service and follows India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Phone numbers are never exposed to other members. Verification selfies are deleted within 30 days. You can export or delete your data from Settings or via delete account. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
